EXTINCT MARSUPIAL.

INTERESTING REMAINS. SYDNEY, Oct. 9. A specimen of fossilised bone, found on the bank of (lie Castlereagh, at “Riversdale,” Gilgandra, has been described by the ourutor of the Australian Museum as part of the jaw and one molar tooth of a gigantic extinct marsupial, probably diprot.odon. “This animal,” says the curator, “'was about as large as a rhinoceros, walked ou all fours like a wombat, and was very massively built, (lie leg bones in particular being strong and thick. Its remains have been discovered in ail parts of Australia, so that it must have been widely distributed in former times.” He adds that the trustees would like to have the specimen as a record of the locality.
