(From Our Own C.-orrespondent). Miss Doreen Saunders, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Saunders, of Wellington, and an erstwhile resident of Thynne street, Foxton, was u very successful competitor at the recent Wanganui competitions. Although only 10 years of age, she took lirst prize in the girls’ test recitation under 16, second for character recital and second for humorous. She won the piano solo under 12, and was lirst in girls’ song under 12, receiving special mention from the judge in iioth of those elasses. She was also very highly commended in three other classes and was second in elocution for girls under 16, a gold medal class. The friends of Miss Beard, of the local Statu school, will regret to learn that she is at present seriously ill; it will probably be some time before she. is again able to take up her duties at the school. Mr Dooley, who some time ago was appointed to the stall' of Central School, Palmerston North, leaves l<'oxton on No-, vemher 3rd. Mr Dooley who has taken an active part in sport life in this town during his few months’ sojourn here, and who has become very popular, will be greatly missed. The recent heavy rains have been responsible for a Hood in the Manawatu river. Flood tides also prevailing the water at the wharf on Thursday morning was exceptionally high. RUGBY. FOXTON WINS LICENSED VICTUALLERS’ CUP. The final match for the Licensed Vie touullers’ Cup, Foxlon juniors v. Shannon, was played on Easton Park on Saturday, and resulted in a win by 8 points to 6 for Ihe home team. Yellow (Foxton) kicked off and immediately took up the offensive, but Red (Shannon! forwards carried play back to midiield. Yellow backs began to throw the ball about but Hunt intercepted, spoiling his effort by knocking on. Walls, at, fullback, put iu a useful run and transferred lu Kirkland, who scored from midfield, il. Hull converted. Foxton 5, Shannon nil. The Red forwards played hard a.ncl giving the ball (o their backs enabled Holden to score. The kick failed. Foxton 5, Shannon 3. For some time play centred in midfield. Kirkland secured and passed out lo Perreau. to llirini to il. Iluff, his puss to Proctor being missed and Hunt put in a good kick for Morgan to follow up and beat Walls for the force. Roach’s kick failed. Shannon 6. Foxton 5. The spell ended shortly after. On resuming, Yellow were very aggressive, the forwards especially working very hard. A good dribbling rush saw Shaw score for Foxton. but Huff's kick failed. Foxton 8, Shannon 6. Red fougljjk hard for a score, but \ ellow were easily able to hold them and the game ended B—6 in favour of Foxlon. After the match the Rugby Union tendered Hie players a dinner when the customary toasts wore honoured.

In reply to one toast Mr Austin said that, he hud been two years on the Rugby Union and in that time had done his best for all clubs. Touching on the question of League getting a- hold in the town, lie was sorry to see this as he considered Rugbv a very much superior sport and hoped that next season everyone would conic hack to the national guino. The reason that League had got a hold was on account of supposed muddling bv the union, but he stated that every public body lie knew of made mistakes at- some time or another.
