Y.M.C.A. DIRECTORS

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho monthly meeting- of the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A. was held last night, when there were present: Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), J. H. Stevens, W. B. Tennont, J. H. Dick, J. C. Young, R. A. Brace, J. Ashcroft G. I. McGregor, J. Balsillio, E. D. Wycherley, W. B. Cameron, G. C. Keeble and Alan Gardiner (hon. secretary) Apologies for absence were received from Messrs M. 11. Oram, O. Monrad, S. Wells and C. E. llisted. Mr Wallace olfored to arrange a Y.M.C.A. motor party to assist the visiting Chinese University soccer team to sec places of interest about the town. Representatives ot tho Manawatu Football Association present expressed their appreciation of the offer. At a previous meeting, on the suggestion of Mr Cameron, it had been decided to set lip a visiting committee each month to view the classes and buildings and report to the monthly meeting. Last night Messrs Stevens and Keeble, the first committee appointed, furnished an interesting report with several helpful suggestions. Messrs Cameron and Dick were appointed the visiting committee for tho ensuing month. An invitation -is to be extended to “Stoker” Stevens, formerly of the Australian navy, to come to Palmerston North when louring New Zealand, the visit to take place in October. Messrs Y allace, Young and Balsillie olfored to guarantee the expenses in connection with uddresses to be delivered by the visitor here. The general secretary reported that early in the month a physical drill display by the senior gymnasium class had been witnessed by over 60 guests, including borough councillors. Arrangements had been made for Rotary Club members'to witness the business boys’ class next week. Members of the Citizens’ Luncheon Club, Manawatu Racing Club, Manawatu ‘Hunt, and Knirnnga County Council would visit the senior class at a later date. The report continued : On Monday members of the visiting Chinese ssoccer team are to be our guests in the, building. The manager of the team, Mr Arthur E. Dome, is physical director of tho Y.M.C.A. lit Hong Kong, and many members of tho team are members ot the Y.M.C.A. in the East. It has been decided to recommence the citiz.ens' intercessory services which were for some time held in the Y.M.C.A. In response to urgent appeals from the junior probation officer, I asked the consent of the executive to take up the work of the big brother movement in Palmerston North. Consent having been given. I expect to have at least twelve boys linked up with big brothers very shortly. I regret to report that Mr Wright, who has so recently joined our staff, now wishes to be relieved of his Y.M.C.A. duties as early as possible to prepare for entrance to the ministry. PHYSICAL CULTURE. The physical culture committee reported that, at its last meeting, the co-operation of the physical committee with the local boy scouts movement was discussed and the following recommendation was sent to the executive: “We recommend that a special class for scoutmasters be formed on Tuesday nights from 7.30 to 8 p.m. for one month, and that further instruction be given if necessary and convenient. This class will be taken by tho physical director. If desirable the leaders’ corps will co-oper-ate with the boy scouts during summer months to further physical work.’’-‘-Re-ferred to a special committee with power to act. The committee further reported as follows: —We have picked a team from the seniors to play a Chinese team at basket ball on Monday night. It is intended to invite the Chinese men to the gymnasium to watch tho class at work previous to the playing of the basket ball match. GENERAL. The membership committee reported that, since the commencement of a campaign on June 16, 37 new members had been secured, while 22 others had signed applications. Since March 1 91 new members had been added. The committee controlling the boys’ division reported that the numbers in tho three groups in tho division at present were as follow: Primary boys 24, secondary boys 34, business boys 34; total 92. Tho interest of the boys in the programme was being well maintained. In the two firstmentioned regular talks were given by the generul secretary weekly. The business boys’ class required a somewhat different approach and the committee had no doubt that it would have the four-square programme in connection with this group beforo long. I
