ALLIES’ CONFERENCE.
HIGH COMMISSIONERS’ STATUS,
EQUIVALENT TO AMBASSADORS.
Received July 21. 10.5 a.m. LONDON, July 20. Each Dominion becomes a member of the Empire delegation, the High Commissioners attending the conference seriatim. Others can attend daily and watch the proceedings. This settlement covers only the present conference and cannot be regarded as a precedent affecting the status of the Dominions. Sir James Allen points out that the settlement means that the status of the High Commissioners has been raised to the equivalent of ambassadorial rank. * It is only the small beginning of greater things.” lie adds. “High commissioners’ duties and responsibilities constantly increasing as the Dominions expand and inevitably it will mean a further recognition, until the positions are equal to those of foreign ambassadors. Sooner or later this must be thoroughly recognised, and the dominions, therefore, should send flic best statesmen to represent them at London.”—Sydney Sun cable. MUDDLING CRITICISED. Received July 21. .'0 a.m. LONDON, July 20. The observer in an editorial, criticises the muddling 'concerning the representation of the Dominions present at the Allied Conference. The Observer insists that the Empire, rs a whole, must definitely choose a regular system which, when found, will have to bo accepted, together with the reality it represents, as a fact in international politics as solid’ us tho Monroe Doctrine.—A. and N.Z. cable.
