SMALLPOX CASES
INCREASE IN UNITED STATES. SOME APPREHENSION FELT. By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received July 21, 8.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, July 19. The United States Surgeon-General Cummings has issued a statement expressing apprehension at the growing number of smallpox cases nationally. The presence of this disease in 35 States is threatening serious consequences unless the .State health officials exercise the greatest vigilance and practise vaccination and re-vac-cination, especially during the coming winter, when smallpox is usually more prevalent. In a recent week 895 cases were reported compared with 371 in the corresponding week of 1923. The disease is most current in the midwest, with Detroit the worst sufferer with 56 cases, and Indianapolis with 45. The urban centres this year report an excess of three times the number of cases compared with 1923. A high mortality is being indicated, the Pittsburg rate being 20 per cent, of those stricken.—A. and N.Z. cable.
