STRIKE OF CHINESE.
DOMESTICS CAUSE TROUBLE. ASSUMING SERIOUS PROPORTIONS. Received Julv 21, 10 a.m. NEW YORK, July 19. Canton messages report that a strike of Chinese domestics in the Shameen foreign quarter is assuming a serious aspect, since 26 labour unions have allied themselvos with the strikers in an endeavour to have repealed the British Consular restrictions upon servants’ entry and departure from Shameen.
A section of the restrictions requires all Chinese to have passes bearing their photographs if they wish to leave the quarter after 9 p.m. Those protesting against the restrictions declare that this puts them on the same level as criminals, and they announce that the Cargo Boatmen’s and Shipping Coolies’ Unions, which are important bodies, will also join in the strike.
Threats have been made against sailors of vessels on foreign registry for the purpose of stopping supplies for foreigners, and this has been partially successful, although Shameen residents are managing to obtain daily supplies from Hong Kong.—A. and N.Z. cable.
