A very old resident of thj Dominion, Mr William Stewart Baxter, died in the Pahiatua Hospital. Decease-.!, who was born in India, was aged 86 years and had lived in Pahiatua for very many years. In July, 1857, as a youth, he wa.- apprenticed in Auckland to Mr James Wood .sub-editor of the Southern Cross newspaper). The late Mr Baxter could narrate same interesting reminisccncos of his experiences in Auckland and Napier. He assisted in the production of the first issue of the Hawke’s Bay Herald. An interesting visitor to Palmerston North during tho week-end was Captain C. Allen, who recently arrived in tho Dominion from America on a visit to his brother in Wanganui. During his stay with his nephew, Mr Ralph Allen, of Union street, the captain, who is aged 84, recounted some of his many interesting experiences while onguged in the manufacture of munitions in the late war. At one time editor of the Toronto Recorder, Captain Allen is at present living in retirement. He leaves again for America in about two months’ time.
