' A special plenary session of the League Council discussed the non-ratification of the eight-hours day by many European Slates (says a message from Geneva). 'I he German delegate's declaration that Germany could not discuss hours control, which would be an intolerable infringement on her sovereignly, caused a mild sensation and vigorous replies by the workers' delegates. Heralded as the Government's greatest attack upon trusts and monopolies, the United States Department of Justice has brought a suit against 50 of the greatest oil refining comi>anies, all affiliated with the original Standard Oil Company, charging them with conspiracy to violate the Sher : man Act, by combining the control of production of petrol through tho utilisation of patent processes.
