DEBATING SOCIETY.
ELOCUTIONARY EVENING.
■ The weekly, meeting of the Palmerston North Debating Society was held last night when Mr G. H. Trott presided. The evening was devoted to readings and elocutionary items by several of the members which, with a general criticism from those present, proved highly interesting. The contributors were:—Messrs A. D. Campbell (extracts from the lifo of Beethoven); A. E. Wright, "Little Bell," L. Hardy, "Man is Made to .Mourn" (Robert Burns), V. Christiansen, "Devil May Care," and G. H. Trott, "Tho Hindoo's Paradise " Two new members in Messrs W. Hebden and E. \V Whitworth were elected. It was decided not to hold a meeting next week owing to the intervention of the show attractions. At the ordinary meeting the following week, a debate will be held, the subject being: "That modern news.paper advertising is beneficial to the comju unity."
