DRAINAGE AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF MAKERUA BOARD,
The monthly meeting of the . Makerua Drainage Board was held yesterday when there were present: Messrs J. Liggins (in the chair), 11. Akers, R. T. Bell, A. Seifert and R. L. Tippler. The Public Works Department wrote acknowledging its responsibility for stopbanking the left-hand side of a creek, which work the board was performing, but did not hold itself responsible for any 'negligence on the part of the board’s serwas decided that the engineer confer with the clerk and draft a reply. In reporting on the difierent works carried oi\t during the month, the overseer stated that since last meeting of the board little had been done in the. way of draincleaning. He had cleaned out 80 chains of Akers’ drain, and" part of No. 1 drain, but had to discontinue the work owing to the presence of too much water the remainder of the time being _ eihployed in repairing the stop-bank. Six and three chains of stop-bank had been filled in on the properties .of Messrs Coley and Akers respectively, while a further week’s work was required to complete the bank at Mr Ross’s, when, the .bank would be in good ordor throughout.—Adopted. _ v Trustee Bell reported that the washout on the river and Makerua bridge had not been attended to, but it was intended that same would be given attention at an early dMe. The aetioi) of Trustee Seifert in appointing Mr Hallam clerk of works was approved. Trustee Tippler reported that he had interviewed Mr Carter and the latter had undertaken to sign a> letter releasing til© board from any liability in regard to his drain. It was resolved that the opinion of. the board’s solicitor be obtained as to whether the special order for the £IOO,OOO loan authorised the expenditure of portion of the loan moneys on making roads, buying land, and erecting bridges in connection with the drainage scheme. The Public Works Department is to be notified that the board’s work was being endangered by the department not closing the gap on the Shanrion-Foxton road and it is to be asked, in the event ot a flood threatening, to take steps temporarily to close the gap, or otherwise raise the elevation of the. bank there. The clerk was granted leave pf absehce from next meeting. Accounts _ totalling £2759 53 8d were passed for payment.
