INDECENT LANGUAGE.

MAN FINED £5. At the Police Court to-day, before Messrs J. Bett and C. Id. Whitehead, J’s.P., Jam.es Vaughan Simpson was charged with using indocent language in the Square oil March 19. The charge was preferred against accused yesterday, but, as ho professed ignorance of the alleged offence, a remand until to-day wax granted so that witnesses could bo called. Asked how he pleaded to the charge accused said : “I know nothing aboiit- it, but I suppose I had better plead guilty.” Senior-Sergeant O'Grady stated that accused cahie to Palmerston North from Pahiatua two days ago, visited various hotels, became intoxicated and later in the day Visited a theatre where lie asked for a ticket. He became abusive to the lady in the pay-box and used the language complained of. “This class of individual,” continued the Senior-Sergeant, “is being Very seriously dealt with just now and they must be taught that they cannot go about the country insulting everybody, especially respectable women, who have their living to earn and are often in such a position that they cannot escape listening to such fiith.” , , , The bench impressed upon accused the seriousness of his offence. He pleaded for leniency, stating that he had a wife and two children dependant upon him. A fine of £5 in default ono month’s imprisonment was imposed. Accused asked for time in which to pay the fine, whereupon. Senior-sergeant _ O’Grady said: “This man is not a resident of the town. He is, a ‘bird of passage’ and that kind of people take some finding.” The bench ordered accused to pay the fine at the rate of £1 oer week.
