OBJECTION TO FINANCE BILL
Received March 20, 9.50 a.m.
DELHI, March 19
The Viceroy sent back the Finance Bill to the Assembly with a recommendation to pass it with a reduced salt duty. 1 Mitilal, the leader of the Nationalist Party, opposed it, whereupon the Assembly refused the introduction of the bill without a division.
The Viceroy’s action was intended to meet all reasonable opposition to the Finance Bill on merit by abandoning the enhanced salt duty which caused a political controversy last year, but tho Assembly refused its introduction solely on the ground that the demands for further constitutional reforms had not yet been conceded.—A. and N.Z. cable.
