ATHLETIC SPORTS.

annual fixture at sandon.

The thirt. annual meeting of tho Sandon Sports Clu held on the local recreation grounds yesterday, was favoured by fine weather and a large attendance of both public and competitors, the numerical strength aid quality of the latter being responsible for some interesting events. In the open hunters’ competition the valuablo silver cup donated by Mr R. Martin, of Choltenhan,, to be won outright, was annexed by Mr J. McDonell’s Papatere, the owner being handed the trophy by Mr. J. Linklater, M.P. Much interest was centred in the McKelvie Shield competition for primary schools, and at the-conclusion of the., juy mile events it was found that Terraco Ei d and Manchester street (Podding) had lied with 50 points each. The latter schcol held the trophy last year. During tho day Mr Linklater hunded the shield to the representatives of the successful schools Tho trophy will bo held by each for si c months. The running, cycling and Highh.nd events wero all characterised by keen competition, and tho fixture ranks among tho most successful yet conducted by the club. The Foxton band was in attendance and played selections throughout the day. The chief officials were as follow: —Judges: Messrs J. F. McKelvie, J. 11. Perrett. and C. Price, cycling' and running : Mr J. B. Bradley, horse evnts: Mr D. Munro Highland events. Other officials were: Dirtctor of sports, Mr A. K. Drew; deputy-director, Mr 11. J. Fagan: handicapper, Mr T. The Poliangina Valley Sports Club which has enjoyed a successful career ot over two decades held its annual tixtui© in ground,! adjoining tiio Pohangina river yesterday. The favourable climatic conditions enticed a record gathering and an enjoyable day was spent. The horse events, a 3 in keeping with a rural area, held pricks of place oil the programme and some well-known performers wero entered. The chief :vent of the afternoon, the open hunters, v as annexed by Mr W. Olliver with his horse Guy Willie, the victor of many otlur contests, while Mr W. Taylor filled second and third places with his horses Bo irlon and Consul. A trial of equestriamhip, together with agility of the stock horse, was forthcoming in the stockmen’s event and Mr J. Hewison, who was closely attended by Mr D. Balmer, emerged the winner. Two motor events were included and the potato dropping from a spieding car proved highly popular, several competitors proving of equal merit in the ma;ter of hits registered, but Miss A. Robert s gained the decision from a point of view of time occupied in negotiating thi course. The athletic events attracted good entries and some keen racing eveatijated. Additional prizes were offered by sportsmen from Palmerston North who entered into the spirit of the gathering. Children’s races were also held. The conduct of the meeting was

all that could be desired, a band of officials working hard for its general success, while n committoe of ladies attended to tho catering with an equal measure of success. The patron, Mr J. D. Balmer, on whose property the fixture was held, the president, Mr R. McDonald, and the secretary, Mr E. Loamy, all assisted in supervising the proceedings. In the horse events Messrs H. Beatson and W. G. Shannon acted as judges whilo Messrs C. Stevens and W. Blackall filled a similar role in the foot events. The Ashhurst band, was iii attendance and provided an excellent musical programme. A thoroughly successful day was brought to a fitting conclusion by the holding of a dance in the evening in the Ruami hall, when again a large attendance was in evidence.
