MEMORIAL CAMPAIGN.

POHANGINA HELP REQUESTED

During an interval in tli} proceedings at the Polmngina spori s at liauipai yesterday Mr F. J. Nathan, Mayor of Palmerston North and chairman of the War Memorial Compaig l Committee, took the opportunity ti make an, appeal for monetary support toivards the memorial. He stated that some time had elapsed since it wts first proposed to erect a memorial n Palmerston North as a tribute to those men who had gone from the d strict and who had fought on the battlefields for their King and country. It had, however, not been intended that the memorial should be confined purely to Palmerston North, but be for the wliolo of the Manawatu. A though the campaign had been launchec somewhat late, it was nevertheless tlie bounden duty of the residents of the Manawatu to see that a fitting tribute wus_ paid the memory of those me l who had fiven their all in the tim 3 of need. lany of the districts ln.d erected memorials at their school:., but the speaker had been given to understand that no such action had be. ill taken at Raumai or Ponangina and he therefore sought their co-operation in the realisation of a central monument. The committee had set out to raise £SIXIO, and of that amount £4700 had been promised and £3OOO had hii-en already collected. The monument it was proposed to erect was a replic a of that erected at Folkestone and which faced towards the battlefields of France. Although the former had ecst £IO,OOO, the reduced cost of the Palmerston North memorial had been possible by reason of the same mould being employed. All tlie names of die soldiers who had gone from the district would figure thereon, and, subject to the railway deviation eventuating, the memorial Would be erected an the junction of the four routes leading into tlie Square. Some people had asked why something of a more utilitarian nature had not been decided upon, but the speaker contended that the thought was abhorrent for, as with the individual memory, so should it be with the New Zealanders who had sacrificed their all, giving them a monument which the future generations would reverence. Cr. H. YV. Smart, chairman of the Poliangina County Council, in thanking >Mr Nathan for his attendance, stated that he agreed with the idea that there be a central memorial and expressed the wish that the residents of the district would give it their support.
