PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

FINAL STILL TO BE PLAYED

The champion of champions pairs competition, which was commenced on the Palmerston North Club's green on Saturday, did not, as had been anticipated, reach the final stage, the semifinal finishing too late to permit of the deciding game being finished before dark. The final will be played off on a date to bo fixed. . ' '

Three rounds were concluded during the day, the results of the first two being published in tho “Standard” on Saturday. In the third round James and Mules (Woodville) 25 defeated Bull and Sulian (Levin) 18, and Morgan and Tantrum (Talcaro) 16, defeated Englebretsen and Bissell (Dannevirke) 15. The game between Tantrum and Bissell was most exciting. At the end of the fifth head Tantrum was leading 9—4, but scoring on several consecutive heads Bissell was five in the lead on the twentieth head. Tantrum managed to secure the five necessary to tie on the twenty-first, and an extra head was played, Bissell’s last shot knocking the jack against one of Tantrum’s bowls and giving the Takaro pair the shot and a one point win’. • Tantrum and Mules will meet in the final, which will be played on the Palmerston North Club’s green. CASTLE BOWLS COMPETITION. During the week a further Series of singles matches were played on the Northern Club’s green for the Castle bowls. The results were as follows: First Round': Larcomb beat Bryant, Palmer beat O’Reilly, Walker beat Kensington, Boon a bye. Second Round: Larcomb heat Boon, Palmer beat Walker. Palmer and Larcomb will play off to see who will represent the Wednesday players in the. final. On Saturday afternoon the players from the previous Saturday continued the competition with the following results: —Third Round: Fraser beat Galland, and Stuart beat Arnott. Fourth Round: Stuart beat Fraser by 21 to 19, the game going to 27 heads. The winner of the Palmer-Larcomb match plays Stuart for the bowls.

The final match in the Palmerston Club to find the champion of champion rink representatives for Saturday next was played last Saturday, when Needham beat Jones by 33 to 8. An annual tournament between teams from Wanganui, Wellington, Feilding and Palmerston North took place at Palmerston North during the week-end. The matches were most interesting and an enjoyable time was spent. The Wanganui rink, skipped by A. E. Webb, formerly of Palmerston North, won the tourney.
