MAORI “PRINCE'S” FUNERAL.
OBSEQUIES AT TAUPIRI. LARGELY-ATTENDED TANGI. HAMILTON, Jan. 27. The funeral of the late Toipu Maliuta, second brother of “King” Rata, and son of the lato “King” Mahuta, took place to-day. ’! he deceased, who was about 35 years of age, died at the Waalii pa last Thursday. Natives from all parts of New Zealand assembled, and during the tangi over 1000 natives, including many influential rangatirus, had gathered at the pa. ’J'lie funeral'cortego was a very long one. The interment took place at tlie ’laupiri natives’ cemetery, 'this consists of a hill, and as deceased held high rank he was buried near tho summit. The task of carrying tho casket to this point was an arduous one, and 16 able-bodied men were employed in conveying the remains to their last resting place. The obsequies were carried out by the Rev. A. J. Seamer, genera! superintendent of the Methodist Maori Mission, and several native clergymen.
