DEAR PRODUCTION.
B (NKER ON BETTER WAY TO REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT. “I am not one of those who believe tl at our unemployment difficulties will disappear with the restoration of European purchasing power,” declared Sir H. Hambling, president of the Institute ol Bankers, London, in addressing the members recently. The European position was responsible for some loss of trade, but we were losing more as a result of high productnn costs, a matter within our own control. One remedy would be to lower wages, but that would bo very undesirable.
“Another and better way,” Sir Herbert added, “would be to increase production by the adoption of improved methods, but greater efficiency on the part of capital and by greater efficiency and increased output on the part oi the worker. “If all restrictions on output were rt moved by Labour, and if all our tradiig interests aimed at making a large t( tal profit by securing a small profit on each individual item of a big output, rather than by making a large profit on a small output, we should increase our overseas trade, develop our home markets, and provide a large number ol our unemployed with remunerative work.”
