NOTES. (By "Flaneur." Owners and trainers are 'given a reminder that nominations for the AshhurstPohangina meeting, to be held on November 21, close with the secretary (Mr A. W. Trass) on Wednesday, October 31, at 9 p.m. The telegraph office closes at 8 p.m. Enthusiasm and Tukia arrived at Riocarton on Wednesday from Wellington. Lochson, which won the Hurdle Race at the Levin meeting, is an animal that is likely to be hoard of again to advantage in early engagements. After the Wellington meeting Mark Time was sent back to Hawora, where ho is trained by Oney Cox. Mark Time has been scratched for the New Zealand Cup, Tarleton, which raced in Australia, is back again in Auckland,.;. but has been allowed to forfeit his engagement in the Great .Northern Guineas. Motley, the smart Absurd two-year-old which won the Rosenealh Handicap at Trent ham. is under orders for Ellerslie. She will be accompanied by Veil. As a result of his success in the Pearce Handicap at Trentham, Pilliewinkie will have to put up a- 61b penalty in the New Zealand Cup, which will bring his weight to 7.8. . _ . . After doing his preliminary for the Roseneath Handicap at Trentham, Lamorack dislodged his rider and jumped a fence. Ho sustained some severe amts,» while his jockey, A. J. M’Flinn, broke a collarbone. A. Oliver was the only successful local trainer at the Levin Club’s meeting, held at Trentham, Eonmark and Cushat winning the Lake Handicap and Horowhenua Handicap respectively.. Though the connections of .Roseday deny that they have supported the gelding for the New Zealand Cup, states 'a Christchurch writer, ho and Palestrina are the ruling favourites for next mouth’s race. New Zealand-bred horses won two races at the Roseberry pony meeting in Sydney recently, Red Rock (Rokeby—Rose Red) and Caricature (Absurd—Cannania) winning divisions of the Flying Handicap. It is understood that G. Jones, who recently returned from Australia,- will set up as a public trainer at Cambridge. He already has charge of Mr G. L. Stead's horses, and shoqld not lack opportunities in his new location. As was the case on the first day at Trentham Quest was prominent in the Pearce Handicap till the straight was reached. Then ho- beat a -hasty retreat, finishing with his stable mate, Scion, at the tail of the field. Pilliewinkie was responsible for an exceptional performance when he won the Pearce Handicap at Trentham. He was a long way buck in the early stages and was second to last at the entrance to the straight. Then his rider took him to the extreme outside and he mowed the field down with an electrical run, which landed him an easy winner. Nothing so attractive has been seen this season, and the Winkie gelding is likely to come very much into favour for the New Zealand Cup. Two horses were destroyed as the result of injuries sustained while contesting events at the Waikato Hunt meeting. Merry Dan came to grief in the Maiden Hunters Steeplechase, and during the running of the Ladies' Bracelet event Uncle Sam slipped a letlock as the field was turning out of the straight. Lark Hall caule down in the Cup Steeplechase, his rider, E. Warner, sustaining a broken collarbone, while W. Rennie received minor- injuries when his mount, Waikawa, fell. Writing to the Referee recently anent the Melbourne Cup, “Pilot” remarked: “If Dr. Lang were to rehandicap the whole of the Melbourne Cup field it is probable he would raise Heir Apparent more than most. That horse has only 71b more than when he ran second in the Sydney Cup, and his recent form has been good. The indications are that Heir Apparent will be quite at his best for the Melbourne Cup. No doubt David will run well .with 9.10, but on Randwick Plate form lie has no pull oyer either Rapine or Rivoli." With the, Rouble that arose over the scales at the Takapuna course last March, writes “Phaeton,” it was only to be expected that the committee of'the T.J.C. would move in the matter in a pointed manner, in order to establish the necessary confidence and accuracy of the weighing apparatus used on their course under all conditions. Tba "scales”'were submitted to a complete overhaul at the hands of the. expert sent from Christchurch, and last week underwent a most searching lest in the presence of the ■ inspector of weights and measures and of Major Coyle and the secretary, Mr R. Wynyard. The scales were tested from 6.0 to 14.0, and the records in every instance were accurate to the complete degree. Lady Fingers was omitted from the acceptors for the Canterbury Jockey Club's
Stewards’ Handicap as they appeared in the Wellington papers, while Raizle Dazzle's name was missing from the Derby (states the Lyttelton Times). Their owners telegraphed to the club, and in duo course received the gratifying assurances that their representatives were in, In tho case’ of Lady Fingers, however, the omission had a much more serious aspect. Her veteran Wairarapa owner,'Mr R. Knox, had been approached last week by an Auckland sportsman and had agreed to sell at fifteen hundred guineas, delivery to bo given before Saturday’s spriilt race. It is understood that a representative of the prospective buyer was on the course ready to pay over the money, but as the mare apparently had been allowed to drop out of the Stewards’ Handicap ho was instructed by his principal not to complete the deal. The mare, therefore, won the Shoi-ts Handicap at Trentham in the interest of Mr Knox, who also has a good chance of adding the big Riccnrton sprint to her record. If the sale had'taken place, Lady Fingers would have gone into N. Cunningham’s Auckland stables. ' TROTTING NOTES. The locally-owned Speculator rated unsuccessfully at the Auckland meeting, but might do better at Christchurch, Daphne Wildwood was taken through to the Auckland ’ meeting, blit the company was too hot and she failed to get into a place, although well fancied by her party. Mr J. Mitchell has just started working two nice mares by Hal Zolock. One is from, a King Tracey mare and tho other’s dam is Tho Limit. Both arc in nice condition and will bo heard of in the near future* Snow Shoe, Acron and Great Hope are the ruling favourites for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, while others well fancied are Onyx, Tarairo and Trix Pointer. The Greymoulh Trotting Club’s meeting just concluded was a record one for the club. The totalisator figures showed an increase of just on £9OOO over last year. A largo number of Christchurch sports inaldo the trip by train via Arthur’s Pass,' Roe, Bell continues lo do good, solid work on the local tracks. Lady Nan was . on the sick-list last week, having contracted a slight attack of inflammation, but is alright again. Morning Light, by Uolindo, which raced •unsuccessfully last season is now doing profitable work in the shafts of a local carrier’s express. ... J. Shaw was* in good form at the Auckland meeting, steering three winners and one second on the first day. The well-known Addington trainer, J. N. Clarke, was married last week Miss Lelievre, second daughter of Mr E. E, Lelievre, of Akaroa. The champion Happy Voyage has been nominated for the Free-for-all at the Christchurch Cup meeting.
