FOXTON NOTES.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF COUNCIL CHAMBERS. (From Our Own Correspondent). The official opening of the new municipal chambers took place on Thursday evening, and was celebrated by a banquet tendered the ex-Mayors, local body representatives and council employees by the Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr J. Chrystall) presided, and the ceremony was opened by the singing of a verse of the National Anthem. The Mayor apologised for the absence of Mr G H. Stiles, of Palmerston ,North, and Mr Alf Fraser, of Foxton, both ex-Mayors, who were unable to be present. Apologies were also received from Mr Yarnham, architect, and Crs. Coley, Ross and Thorpe.. After the loyal toast had been honoured, that of the “Architect and Contractors” was proposed by Crs. Bryant and Smith. Both spoke in high praise of the way in which the work had been carried out, Mr Hunt returned thanks. The toast of “Borough Council and Burgesses” was proposed by Mr B. G. Gower, ex-Mayor, and replied to by His Worship the Mayor and Crs Adams and McMurray. “Borough Employees” was proposed by the Mayor and Cr. Walker, both of whom spoke in high, terms of the very efficient staff thecouncil possessed. Messrs Trueman, Downes arid Huntley replied. The toast Of “Local Institutions” was proposed V Crs. Adams and Smith, and replied to by Messrs J. Linklaler, J. K. HornbloW and I). Christie. During the evening. musical items were rendered by Messrs,'Head and Poole, and Mr J; ‘K. HonibloW. contributed a" recitation., Mr. Thornber presided at the piano. A 'very' pleasant evening closed with , tlie singing of “Auld Lang Syiie.' There were Upwards of 40 present.
