SPORTING.

NOTES. (By "Flaneur.") M. McCarten will ride Padonna in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. Lady Fingers, a speedy hack last season, is being spoken or.as. a likely outsider for the Stewards' Handicap. The Bulls-owned Mark Time, trained at Hawera, is reported to be doing all that is expected of him; on the tracks. , The recently imported American stallion Brigand will be a starter at the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting on Labour Day. Messrs Dwan Bros, of V/ellington, have claimed the name of Beaumont for the two-year-old full-brother to Alabama (Boniform— Northern Rose).

W. Rayner, the Wanganui mentor, will be represented at the Trentham fixture, by Thespian, Listowel and Motley. The first-mentioned is very-well.

Sir Pam continues to do good work under the guidance of R. Hatch. Sir Pam, which is a smart-looking customer, will win races this season.

The active members of Alex Browne's team are Benmure and Mountain Signal, while he is exercising Pantler and a Boniform filly. The two first-mentioned, it is understood, ♦ ill fulfil Trentham engagements.

"Word comes from Fordell that F. Tilley's team—Padonna, Enthusiasm, and Tukia—have come through a solid preparation, and , all ..three, will.. take some settling in their engagements at Trentham. • . .

The following names have been allotted to Mr J.' B. Reid's two-year-old fillies, trained by R. D. O'Donnell at Trentham':—Kiki fWinkie— KilreaV, Lake Uru (Sunny Lake—Arai-te-Uru), Kilbrennan (Kilbroney—Cyre).

Arthur Oliver has leased the stables owned by Mr. G. Brown, and intends having additional looseboxes erected. Besides others Oliver has in work Piffle, Eonmark, Cushat and Millimetre.

The Dunedin Guineas only dates from 1913, and of the ten races Sir Geo. Clifford has won five and Mr O* G- Dalgety two. Sir George won with First Flight in 1914, and with Long Range, Royal Stag, Winter Wind and Winning Hit in consecutive years, 1918-1921.

Amongst the fillies recently imported from England, and which arrived at Auckland, en route-to Wellington and Lytterton, was one called Pinafore, who, on the. dam's side, is closely related to Rapine, for Pintade, who produced Pinafore to Swynford, is the dam of Pineta, who is by Spearmint (son of Carbine), out of Pintade..

The Gisborne trainer, A. E. Butterworth,, has secured accommodation at Trentham'for Scotch Mixture and patu. If their form justifies it, they will go on to Riccarton before returning home. Gisbornites give it out that Scotch Mixture Will have to be taken into account in connection with the New Zealand Cup.

A Canterbury owner who often races at, Dunedin, being asked if he was going to send his horse to the D.J.C. spring meeting, replied that the travelling expense was too great—he. could send a horse to Wellington for half the money. Is that a factP If so, writes the sporting 6cribe, "Old Identity," it ought to be spoken about to the D.J.C.

• R. J. Mason has returned home from Sydney. Of the seven horses he took away with him, Pluto. Vespucci, Tressayr, Farceur, Lascelles and Golden Tresses were sold, the only one to return to Riccarton being Gloaming. With the champion on the easy list at present, the veteran trainer will have a weak team under his care' in the meantime.

"In the matter of physique, Ballymena was certainly not the swell of the party that filed out of the birdcage to contest the A.J.C. Derby," remarks an Australian writer. "The plain-look-ing one," as the son of Nassau is termed, it is admitted on all hands, displayed grit of a high order when the extra bit was demanded from him in the straight, and his more showy rivals were disposed of.

Sydney sporting writers praise Maurice McCarten's horsemanship highly, and one writer classes him as "superior to Sydney jockeys, with the exception, perhaps, of the veteran Pike." In Ballymena's Derby, "a rough, bumping race, he skilfully avoided the trouble which Shrapnel, Leonardo and Lady Valais struck in largo quantities, and landed his mount a winner in clever fashion."

Muraahi is credited with being in much better fettle than he was last year, when, it will be remembered, he ran third in the New Zealand Cup. The son of Campfire shaped badly in the Masterton Cup, but it may be that the going was not to his liking. Muraahi is engaged in the Waverley Cup, 1J miles, his poundage being 8.12.

Zev, which is to meet. Papyrus in the, match at Belmont Park,. New York, on Saturday next, is a brown' colt'by The Finn from Mrs Kearney by Planudes (St. Simon—'Lonely) from Courtplaster by.Sandrin'gham. by St. Simon. The Finn, the sire of Zev, is by. Ogden by Kilwarlin from Oriole by Bend Or. It will thus bo seen that one does not have to go far back in Zev's pedirgree to. find the well-known English sires. Zev usually races in blinkers.

At the Ascot meeting the New Zea-land-bred gelding Killashandra (by Kilbroney—Symbolism) led the field home hi.the Fourteen-two Handicap (six furlongs), carrying 9.1, and winning easily. In referring, to Killashandra, the Sydney Sportsman refers to the New Zealand gelding as a champion, and then proceeds: From the earliest .times \of pony racing the 14.2 class-has produced quite a succession of champions. These have been wonderful performers for their inches, and at intervals we get one that is right out of the box. The New Zealand pony Killashandra comes, into this category, and his performance in the first division of the Fourteentwo Handicap at Ascot stamped liim as out of the common. Never was a race won more easily. Seabrook jumped Killashandra out, and then took a firm hold of him. Killashandra won with his mouth wide open. How far he would have won.by.had he pushed out is beyond estimation.
