MAYOR AN EX-CONVICT.

MANILA SENSATION; CONVICTED OP ABDUCTION. MANILA, Aug. 21.. A bombshell burst in political circles this afternoon when Senor Quezon, the Filipino leader, announced that ho had cabled to the United States Secretary for War that tho Mayor of Manila, Senor Rodriguez, who was recently appointed by the Gov-ernor-General, General Leonard Wood, was formerly a convict in Bilibid prison. Rodriguez was convicted in 1900 of forcibly abducting a woman by. the aid of a gang of bandits, and of being an accomplice in the murder of a sergeant of the United States Army, Tie was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment and fined 1000 pesos (£100). General Wood says he is much surprised at Senor Quezon’s disclosures. "Neither I nor anyone who has hold this office,” ho said, “had any knowledge of anything unfavourable to Senor Rodriguez. The records show that he was convicted by a military court during the Filipino insurrection, and that since his. release he, has had an excellent record us a public official,. Ho has been twice elected Mayor of this town, and twice Governor of his province.” General Wood declared that the reason for digging up tho case at this time was “political mud-slinging."
