UCLY STAMPS .
NEED FOR BETTER DESIGNS. LONDON, Aug. 1., Tho secretary of the Royal Philatelic Society, discussing the proposed new issue of Australian stamps, stated that no one cared if Australia omitted the King's head on her postage stamps^ It is of much more importance, ho says, that Australia should produce more stylish designs, instead of the present unattractive ones. Messrs Stanley Gibbons and Company, ono of tho largest stamp dealers in tho world, stated that all dealers liked to soe tho King's head retained, as it seems natural to nave it on Dominion stamps. If the Dominions want something typical, let them adopt the West Indies practice of combining the King's head with local views. All Dominions designs have deteriorated. Somo of tho earliest Australian issues were among tho best oxamples, it sceins, but latterly both design and execution are bad. A common mistake is too much jumbled detail in & small space. Australia should set example with clearer definite designs.
