DECLINE IN SOUTH AFRICA. CAPETOWN, June 26. The president of the Johannesburg Chamber of Minos in an open letter to the president of the South African Agricultural Union points out Unit tho gold mining industry is on the decline and unless new discoveries arc made, of which at present there is no evidence, mining operations must be reduced at least 50 per cent by the. end of 10 yens, and portion uf the taxation now borne by the mines must fall on oilier primary industries, lie urges in, order to meet, the new situation the imposition of a lav on unimproved land valu ts, the proceeds to be devoted to the benefit of the agricultural and pastoral industries, the tax to be. remitted in proportion to aH'oreslation bv the fanners. -A. and N.Z.
