Figuring prominently in the itlraclions which will be presented the public on Monday is tlio annual seveu-a-side Rugby tonrimrneni which will ho conducted by the Manawatu Rugby Union at the Showgrounds. Each succeeding year has witnessed the increasing popularity of This fixture, and the 1923 tournament has drawn record entries, no less than 44 teams having notified intention of being present. The Kia Ton Chib, tlio present holders of the Thompson-Paync Cup ,'n the senior grade, promise to field a powerful team m the light to retain the honour. The wide range of teams must conta’n redoubtable opponents, and the outcome of tho tournament is _ very uncertain. In the junior grade High School, the holders of tho Rogers Cup, will malm a big bid to retain possession, the display of tho schoolboys in the past has ever been an attractive feature. Tncir ranks contain several versatile players, and aided by their natural fitness, they will prove formidable opponents. The ordinary competitions have revealed that there is a wealth of speed merchants at present playing the Rugby code, and the suvon-a-sidf* game will provide numerous opportunities for tue employment of these assets The duration of the spells compels •he adoption of a smart pace, and spectators will thus bo kept at a high pitch of excitement. Play will commence at 10.20 a.m. and w ill be continued throughout the day, Refreshments will be procurable on the ground and tin; players and spectators Wilt be thus able to retain a close interest m the proceedings. It only remains for conditions to be favourable to provide holiday makers with a full day of Rugby football.
A Rugby team from the combined Wellington banks will vim Palmerston thU week-end and will trv conclusions with u team chosen from the stalls of the local banks on Monday morning at 10 o'clock on High School grounds.
