A football match was played on the school grounds on Wednesday last between the Rongotea Football C'Jub and a combined (Hen Oroua and Kaimataran team, resulting in a drawn game, nine points all. Being the first match of the season, with the idea of getting the players into practice for the club lixlures to commence on the 28th inst., the game, although not lacking spirit and enthusiasm, was not productive of brilliancy on either side, though there was some good individual play in both teams. Whitchouse being very prominent for ilii' home side, while Dixon and Wood-gai-e did good work for (lie combined team. The spectators were unexpectedly surprised hv the sound defence of the lighter home fifteen (a young team just formed) against the onslaughts of the heavier combined fifteen. At the call of half-time no score had been registered. On the recommencement of play, the visitors attacked strongly and were rewarded with an unconverted try. The home team then rallied and soon afterwards crossed their opponent’s line, the attempt to add the major points failing. Outer, as the result of a penalty, Whilehouse (Rongotea) placed the ball between the posts, thus giving Rongotea the lead. However, Glen Oroua again attacked and were able to score from a scrum on_ the line. After up and down play the visitors again crossed the line by fast following up after a lucky kick and scored, the try being unconverted". Just on the call of time Rongotea made a spirited attack and scored, the kick at goal falling. The game thus ended Rongotea 9, combined 9. A. Whitehouse and J. Griffith were responsible for the points on the Rongotea side, while L, Watkins, T. Dixon and B. Algor scored for the combined team. We are pleased to learn that Air J. It. Clausen, of Kaunatarau, has been able to return home after his recent illness. Air R.
