CROQUET TOURNAMENT.

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS,

The North Island championship croquet tournament commenced this morning on the Manawatu Chib’s greens, which are in excellent order for this important fixture. The entries are exceedingly numerous, and include a good proportion of players from outside districts. Ihe tournament manager is Mr F. J. Nathan, assisted by Mr C. L. Ferguson. Messrs R. Canghley, H. PStratton and J. Murray have been appointed referees. Play will commence at 9 o’clock each morning. The tournament was opened by Mr F. JNathan who, after alluding to the promise of a successful fixture, mentioned that as in tho handicap doubles there were 160 matches, not including sectiqn ties, there would be no section play in that event. The only time limit imposed—three hours -j-was in respect to this section of tho Rnrnament. It was important that players should know that when a ball went oF the green it must be replaced by the player with his or her back to the lawn. Hu stated that the draw and tho greens to bo. played on would be arranged in the evening, and players would find them in the morning paper. It was regretted that the Christchurch players had been unable s lo attend, but all that was needed now to the success of the tournament was *'.“W.ther. v The games decided up to tho time ot going to press were ; Doubles Championship: First round, Mrs Mcßae and 11. P. Stratton defeated Mrs Bull and Rhodes- Williams, 26CT6; Mosdaines Pitcaithley and Watkins defeated Mrs Rigg and R. Canghley, 26—1-1. Handicap Doubles: Mesdiimcs Young and Mayes beat Mesdamcs Sinclair and Spinley. 26—9; Mesdames Baxter and Corbridgo beat Mesdamcs Milton anil iilackburne, 26—6.
