A private cable received in Wellington reports the death in London of Mr I'. Heisse, for many years general manager of the. Eastern Extension Telegraph Lo. The Rev. C. F. Pierce, the new principal of the Wanganui Collegiate School, arrived in Wanganui yesterday and last evening was tendered a reception. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr T. M. Wilford) has been ordered by his medical adviser to undergo a slight operation, and will be unable to resume his seat m the House of Representatives for a few days. Mr F. J. Chisholm, who has retired from the position of chief postmaster at Dunedin, has removed to Wellington, where ho and his family intend in future to reside. Mr Chisholm was for some time assistant-postmaster, Wellington, and prior to the retirement of, the late Mr Dryden ho acted as chief postmaster there for several months. The Chronicle announces the death of a well-known figure in the person of Mr J. F, Smith, proprietor of stables in that township. Deceased had been ill for some days, and was taken to the Palmerston North Hospital on Wednesday, but collapsed and died upon reaching the institution. In former years he was in business in Palmerston North in the old livery stables in Rangitikei street. The death has taken place at New Plymouth of Mr James Macfie, of Oaonui, at the ago of 81 years. He was a native of Scotland, and during his early life followed a seafaring occupation, being skipper oi various coastal boats plying round Scotland. He took the keenest interest in yachting, and was regarded as one of the best yachtsmen in Scotland. So great was his knowledge in this direction that once he was chosen by Sir Thomas Lipton to judge au important sailing contest. The late Mr Macfie went to the Taranaki district about 40 years ago, being one of the original leaseholders under the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act. There passed away at the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday a well-known and respected resilient of Longburn in the person of Mr diaries Prouse. The deceased gentleman was born at Wainui-o-mata, Wellington, in 1854. After following agricultural pursuits in the Wellington district, during the early part of his hie, Mr Prouse moved, to Levin, where he was farming until 1909, when he went to Longburn, residing there for the remainder of his life. Mr Prouse had .been in indifferent health for some time and was an inmate of the hospital for about seven weeks prior to his death. He leaves a widow, one daughter, Mrs P. Moore, of Main street, Palmerston North, and one son, Oliver, also of Longburn, to mourn their loss. His death will be regretted by a wide circle of friends.
