HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Horowhemia County Council was hold on Saturday at Levin, when there were present; (As. G. A. Monk (chairman), A. R. Knox, 11. Barber, P. J. Ryder, S. A. Broadbolt, C. I. Harhness, J. McLeavey and H. G. Bryant. CORRESPONDENCE. The General Manager of Railways wrote stating that it was not possible to accede to the council’s request Unit an alteration be made in the train service to suit the convenience of school children residing north of Levin, and who desire to attend the District High School at that centre.— Crs. Darkness and Ryder deplored the spirit of the department’s reply, and the letter was received. The Thames Borough Council wrote asking support of a resolution urging the Government to raise a loan to meet the needs of local bodies in connection with their antecedent liabilities.—Received. A linn of Wellington solicitors wrote asking for a certificate to the eftect that a road at the rear of properties at Pukcrua, owned by Messrs F. G, and L. Al. Bevtln, was maintained and used by the council as a public road.—A small committee was sot Up to inspect the locality, with a view to making enquiries and bringing down a report before tho question of issuing a certificate be considered. A Levin solicitor wrote asking that the council have executed Iho acceptance of tho dedication of u road in the sub-division of tho eslato of the late Air AI, H. E. Gorriiigo, situated near Koputaroa, r llie road had been laid off and formed to the satisfaction of the council for some time, but was never dedicated,—The necessary formal action was taken. A RATEPAYER’S OBJECTION. Airs C. T, Tatum, Alanakau, forwarded a letter through the medium of her solicitor-, objecting to the council’s proposal to lake a portion of her property for road purposes. The letter pointed out that a neighbour of Airs Tatum, Mr Bovan, already hud access to his land, and that it the council could form an opinion on this point, it would facilitate the matter of deciding whether Airs Tatum’s objection was a meritorious one. Air and Airs Tatum also waited on the council and spoke in support of the objection. If the land was taken, said Mr Tatum, tho railway authorities would, he 101 l sure, either close the railway crossing near the property or compel (he owner of tho land (Airs Tatum) to erect a high bridge over the line, for trnflic. Before the council decided to take what was come of Airs Tatum’s most valuable land, the railway authorities should bo consulted. Mr Bovan, ho said, exmld obtain access to his land by another route. After hearing the objection, it was resolved that the council proceed with tho making of a right-of-way through the property. ’ ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Air W. N. Anderson) reported (inter alia) that in the Tokomaru riding at (he northern end everything was in fairly good order, but at the southern end some of tho roads were in great need of repair, and during the period a quantity of gravel was put out to patch the worst parts until the plant could be sent out. In tho Who kino Riding approximately 1100 cubic yards of gravel had been distributed on the various roads and ,the plant was at present working on the main road. On Weraroa Settlement road a great deni of inconvenience had been caused whilst reforming this road, owing lo the want of consideration on the part of drivers oi motor vehicles, and especially the drivers of outside motor lorries. It was theretore found necessary to close the road and divert all traflic by way of_ Bruce and Buller roads. The next repair work to lie put in hand was the Levin-Foxton road, which would ho started in about ten days’ time. A start was made during the week with the Aluhnnoa west water-race extension, and should bo completed before next meeting.
