YACHT’S LONG VOYAGE.
CREW’S DirToF SHARKS. THIRTEEN HOURS AT THE WHEEL. Received July IT, 9.15 a.m. BRISBANE, July 11. The yacht Oncata (thought to he the Rauta, which was taken Horn Auckland) has lioon brought from Yeppon to Rockhampton. From what can be gathered, the vessel covered over 4800 miles in its trip, mainly under sail. The log found aboard state that when oil the New Zealand coast the crew got provisions from a passing vessel. The yacht’s course starting from the New Zealand coast was to the Kormadecs, then east to Rapa Island, then south to New Caledonia, thence in a northerly direction, and so on till the Queensland coast was reached. The crew for the part of the time lived on sharks, which were harpooned. They also condensed salt water when the fresh was exhausted. . One of those arrested is reputed to he a skilful seaman, with a record of service os second mate on big liners. During the Oneata’s voyage lie put in 13 hours at the wheel on end, the greater part being at night, the only aids to navigation being a howl compass and an ordinary school atlas. Press Association.
