AUSTRALIAN “SOCCER” TEAM.

ARRIVAL IN PALMERSTON NORTH

CIVIC RECEPTION,

A civic reception was tendered the Australian Association football team on their arrival in Palmerston North (his morning. Tho gathering took place in tho Borough Council Chambers, when the Mayor, borough councillors and a largo number of “soccer” enthusiasts and representatives of other sports bodies were present. Mr J, Ellis, president of tho Manawntu Football Association, briefly introduced the team to the gathering. The Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.), stated that tho Visit of tho Australians (o this town had been looked forward to and would greatly further (lie interests of the game in the Manawntu. Although Association football was not tho national game in Now Zealand, it was closely following in tho footsteps of Rugby. He hoped that next year it would be possible for New Zealand to send a team to Australia in order to repay this visit of the Australians. Palmerston North was well catered lor in (he matter of playing areas as the team would see when they were taken round the district. Although the laurels of tho tests rested with New Zealand it was not the actual winners who counted—rather it was the cementing of the lies of friendship between the people of Australia and of New Zealand. When the team went back they could tell Australia how much the people of New Zealand appreciated their visit. Councillors Lancaster mid Canton also sfluak*. voicing the welcome of tho people of Palmerston North. Messrs IVI. H. Oram and A. M. Ongley, representing hockey and Rugby respectively, tendered the welcome of these bodies. Mr Morgan, (ho manager of the team, thanked (hose present for the cordial reception they had received, and stated that the team owed a debt of gratitude to the Rugby unions in New Zealand, for m nearly all their matches they had played on Rugby grounds. Ho hoped that the Maori Rugby Union team was receiving as good a time in Australia as the Australian “soccer” players were receiving in Now Zealand. He hoped that tho game against Manawatu tomorrow would give the code a boost in this district, Although beaten iu tlio tests, Ins team could congratulate the Now Zealanders on their showing, lie hoped that when tho time came for New Zealand’s visit to Australia the iwsition would be reversed. “For They ere Jolly Good Fellows was then sung and cheers were given lor the Australian team.
