ENGINEER’S REPORT. Awahott riding.—A good deal of attention has been directed to reinforcing various bridges, several of which have been strongly braced and are now capable of standing the heaviest motor traffic, particularly in Awahou and Tamaki ridings, us the spans are of totara girders. Metal has also been carted by the horse and dray for general repair work. Coal Creek riding.—An old wooden culvert of considerable dimensions situated on London’s road, collapsed and allowed the road to fall in.- To effect a. speedy repair, we removed the filling, which was about seven feet deep, and timbered over the broken portion of the dock. This, however, will only suffice for the time, therefore 1 would recommend re-building with concrete as soon as possible. Mangahao riding,—The bridge on Valley road, near Mr Whittaker’s, will he attended to us soon us possible to prevent the creek causing any further erosion to the approach. Included in work of maintenance of roads, etc., which has been done in this riding, are the repairs to the damaged portion of Binnis track. Mangapikopiko riding.—The roads in this riding are in good order for the season of the year, therefore, apart from the work carried out by the permancut roadman, there is, in my opinion, no necessity for any further expenditure in the way of metalling at the present time, as the roads are soft for carting with drays, particularly in this riding, where long haulage is necessary. Pohungina riding.-Improve-ments have been eflected on Branch road in several places by building up the sides where slips had occurred. Willows have also been planted on the lower .side and should have the effect of holding the sandy banks from further erosion. Tamaki ruling.—Tin* council’s teams have been employed at various works in this riding for the' month and have effected general improvements throughout by trimming oil the sides of theiroads with the grader and cambering them, also cutting bade projecting points, etc. In addition to the above work advantage was taken nt occasions when the roads were dry for carting and by this means 265 cubic yards of metal were carted and spread, Umutoi Ridings.—l have recently made an inspection of ..roads that require to be metalled in ibis riding, with the object; ol determining the best method of obtaining metal. Owing, however, to the expense of napping by manual Inborn; the very coarse metal, which is all that is available, 1 would suggest, as the council is contemplating purchasing a. portable crusher at ;1 „ early date, that no great amount, o metalling be undertaken until its arrival as it will very considerably reduce the cost not. only of napping the metal, hut also of carting. The haulage would he much shorter by shifting the plant- to places on the roadside, where the metal is too rough to he of any use in its present state, but when dealt with by the stone crusher would he veiv suitable. The council’s teams are, approaching this locality and could cart sufficient to meet the present requirements. Now that wo have the Public Works authority to proceed with the erection of Umutoi stream bridge, J have ordered die necessary material and a start can be made with this work soon, j have attended to Makoum bridge, which required screwing tip throughout as n. had become greatjy sagged owing to the shrinkage of the timber.
