WORLD OF SPORT.

RUGBY NOTES. (By "Cross-Bar.") The Manawatu senior representatives rather easily defeated Oroua at Kimbolton last Saturday. Although tho match was played in the rain the backs ot the Manawatu team gave a good exhibition of handling. Swamson at full performed the work that was required of him satisfactorily, but showed on several occasions ft disinclination to take the ball on the lull, rather preferring to wait for tho bounce. His place-kicking was the feature of the match. From hard angles, with a heavy, .sodden ball, at times against a moderate wind, ho kicked lour goals—a splendid performance; Bailey (wing three-quarter) lacked dash, hesitating too much when opportunities presented themselves. Mullins (centre) played a sound game, handling the muddy ball with a high degree of accuracy and making several good openings, but nullified theso by hanging-on too long. Glendinning (wing) registered two tries and would have had more to his credit had ho been more certain with his handling. He ought to pay more care to taking and giving passes. Bramwell (five-eighth) was sound on attack, but displayed an inclination to kick 100 often Alaire (live-eighth) did not get rid of the ball quick enough, hanging-on spoilt several openings tor Bramwell. Rose (half-back) played a good game, but on occasions was slow at getting the ball away, probably owing to its very greasy nature. Leeder (wing-forward) was very quick off the mark, but through overeagerness got off-side too frequently. He made some fine openings for the backs. Dustin (support and captain) was easily the pick of the forwards, and was tho hardest toiler on the ground. This player is a very sound general and uses his head to advantage. All the other forwards played well, Carroll and Harknesa being perhaps a shade better than the rest. Boddy (backranker) is too gentle and should put more ginger into his work. The hooking of Carroll and Anderson was excellent and enabled Rose to gut tho ball on tho occasion of nearly every scrum. An incident of the match was the overhauling of Leeder by F. Nesdale, the well-known runner. Leeder, obtaining the ball, broke through Oroua's defence and as ho was escorted by Bramwell and Mullins a score looked imminent, but Nesdale, turning round, gave chase and rapidly gained ground on Leeder, who instead of passing apparently decided to test his speed against that of Nesdale. The latter, however, was too fast for Leeder and tackled him, smothering tho pass. Feilding juniors still continue on their winning way. They have not yet had a point scored against them. Even High School on Saturday were not equal to the task of crossing their goal-line. Some very fine football was seen in this match, the" back work of both teams being excellent.

The Manawatu senior representative team will play Horowhernia at Levin on Saturday. Horowhenua, who recently defeated the Maori combination that is now in New South Wales, will give Manawatu a great deal more opposition than Oroua did and a good match should result. Tho local representatives will be the same as those who defeated Oroua.

"SOCCER" NOTES. (By "Side Line.'') The selector'did not receive much help from the North Street Park match on Saturdav, since few players _ exhibited their best "form. Wagstaff caught the eye with nice wing play and excellent centring. Uacl he progressed more towards the comer flagbefore centring there might have been additional results. Millar was badly missed from the right wing, the Ranger, combination, while considerably ahead ol that of Y.M.C.A., being below the usual high standard , Y M.C.A. were oft-colour. there was plenty of good midiield work done, but little "combination was in evidence. Shootin c at goal seemed foreign to the forwards purpose. Taylor, who has tlie proper wing stylo of play, was starved unci had few opportunities of showing his ability. Although Rangers deserved their win, their second goal seemed a lucky one. •\ Referees' Association was formed last week. Rev. C. W. Dimcurnb bein ff elected convener. One of the objects of the association is to promote a more exhaustive study of the rules.

NOTES ON HOCKEY, (By " Shinty.") One of the brightest expositions of hockey this season wus the match on Wednesday lust between Campbell Street Old Boys and Y.M.C.A. There was not much between the teams. Y.M.C.'s sterling defence against Old Boys' forwards was responsible for the drawn game. Y.M.C.A. had the better of the first spell, but in the second Old Hoys were hardly ever out ol their opponents' circle and victory seemed theirs on many occasions. It was certainly Y.M.C.A.'s lucky day, because 1 ticker when within easy striking distance lifted the ball clean over the net, and other shots were saved which would have tested the defence of a representative back-line. There was a very good attendance of spectators at the Sportsground both on Wednesday and Saturday. Interest in the game is certainly growing apace. ' High School Old Girls and Technical School met on Saturday and it was a real good game, the former winning by two goals to nil. The first score came from .\liss McKenzie's stick, the ball being sent high into the comer of the net. The second was the result of a brilliant solo effort by Miss E. Green who is undoubtedly the winners best forward Technical School, though showing improved form do not possess a forward line so clever as the H.S.O.G. eleven. A bad mistake was made on Saturday in not feeding the speedy right wing, Miss Spensley. She i-> their scoring forward, but m the second spell was hardly given a puss from the centre, the ball invariably travelling to the The surprise of the ladies' matches was Rambler's defeat of Rongotea by three goals to two. The latter sorely missed Miss \) Hobbs. Ramblers' win was the outcome of practice and it was most popular. High School Old Boys had a day out and vanquished Y.M.C.A. to the tune of six goals to one. U was their best display so far this season. United drew with Rongotea. but "Shinty" understands the club is appealing regarding a goal that is claimed to have been scored and not given. REFF.REES' CONFERENCE. The con.d'ence of referees convened for last week duly eventuated, and resulted in the formation of a Now Zealand Hockey Referees' Association, with headquarters in Wellington.
