TREMORS AT TAUPO.

SEVERE AND CONTINUOUS,

RESIDENTS FEELING UNEASY,

(Per Press Association.) ROMORUA, June 9,

For some four weeks Tmipo has experienced many earth tremors. During the hrst two weeks the tremors were not unduly noticed, but for flic last two weeks severe and continuous shakes have been experienced. Visitors unaccustomed to the tremors have made exaggerated reports, but now the residents, especially females, are feeling uneasy. The manifestations are essentially local, and are only tremors and not sustained earthquakes. Mhe origin and direction of travel of the quakes are in doubt, Many theories have been advanced by people ot’ the district. The tremors are essentially local, nothing having been felt at Rotorua. Residents of Rotorua who visited Tnupo on Thursday slate that they felt severe tremors, some nearly equal to the Tarawera earthquakes in 1386. The consistency of the tremors has prevented visitors from going to the district, but it is the slack season, and there are not many travelling. The disturbances appear to ho seismic, and there is no unusual thermal action. No expert advice lias been given as to the origin, and the experts are therefore unable to say whether they are serious or otherwise.' INVESTIGATION TO BE MADE. WELLINGTON, Juno 9. In accordance with the suggestion of the Board of Science and Arts, a brief investigation of the earthquakes now occurring at Taupo is to bo made by Mr Morgan, Professor Marsdeu and Dr. Adams, 'they left Wellington to-day, _ and have taken with them instruments with which they will discover the direction of the tremors, and, if possible, arrive at a conclusion as to whether there is a likelihood of a considerable outbreak. With reference to the suggestion in a Rotorua telegram that the telegraph offices in the district should be kept open at night, the Postmaster-General will leave it to the scientists to decide whether this is necessary.
