YOUTHFUL BUSHRANGER, MELBOURNE, March 27. it now transpires that the man shot by Maple (one of the two boys who escaped from reformatories) at Neerim Junction was a returned soldier named George \\ noU slencrolL The latter sighted Maple taking cover behind a log. and rode at hint, swinging his rifle to the level, lilt 1 boy tired a shot, shattering Woolstencroll's rifle stock. The latter then attempted to draw his revolver,, but received a bullet iu the shoulder and as be turned to gallop to cover he was shot through the lung. In view of this episode, the police have had issued to them army rifles and have been ordered to shoot .Maple at sight as he is no longer regarded as a misguided youth, but a. young desperado. to-day an armed party came upon him near Neerim Junction, and he tired twice. A fusillade whs then tired at him and he fell shot between the eyes, lie is not expected to live until he reaches hospital. Ranks. Maple’s associate, states that the latter told him he intended to parallel the worst episodes of the Australian hush rangers, and would not he taken alive. Press Association.
