Manawatu Evening Standard. SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 1922. THE MEAT EXPORT BOARD.
Tin-: appointment of .Mr W. I). Hunt as the representative of the stock and station agents on the Meat Export Hoard will give general satisfaction, and there is little doubt that lip will rentier the Hoard valuable assistance, m its operations. As constituted by the .Meat Export Control Act, the Hoard consists of eight members —two appointed by the Governor-General, as representatives of the Government, five appointed as the producers’ representatives, and one as the representative of the stock and station agents. The appointment of the two Government, and (In' live producers’ representatives, is made obligatory, subsections a and b of section 2, of clause 2 of the Aleut Export Control Act, being mandatory in their wording, So far as the representative of the stock and station agents is concerned, his appointment is purely permissive in character, clause 3 of the Act simply staling that the Governor-General may appoint such a representative as an additional member of the Hoard. When the Government had appointed its representatives, and the producers had appointed theirs, the Hoard was practically' complete, and it; merely rested with tin l Government to say whether it would accept a nominee of the stock and station agents. Deciding to do so, the Government invited the latter to submit the. names of two or three gentlemen who would be willing to act as their representative on the Hoard. They responded by submitting the name of Air W. I). Hunt. The Government then asked for further nominations, but failed to receive them. That failure may Ik* accepted as a practical expression of their belief that Air Hunt is the best and most capable representative they could have. In hesitating over its acceptance of the appointment, the Government seems to have merely had in mind Air Hunt’s former opposition to the meat pooling scheme, consideration of which might well cause it some little feeling of anxiety. However, the appointment has been made and Air Hunt’s reputation amongst his friends, and those who know him, is such that we do not think the Government is likely to have cause to regret its action. /There are few men, either in or out of Wellington, who are credited with possessing sounder judgment, keener business acumen and a wider knowledge of marketing conditions overseas than Mr Hunt possesses. He will, unless we are greatly mistaken, prove a source of strength to ‘his colleagues on the Hoard, and now that tlio meat pooling scheme has been definitely accepted by Parliament and
the producers, lie is not likely to play the laggard when his advice is needed, nor act other than in the producers' , ’nterests, with which the interests ol the stock and station agents, whom he . represents, are also identified. The ’ Government hasj acted wisely in accept- ; ing and appointing .Mr Hunt as a mom- > her ot the Board. It had a right to 1 weigh every consideration fully and 1 thoroughly before coming to a decision, •. because it may become financially in- j volved in iho meat pool, which it has undertaken to assist in financing if necessary. We believe we are right in saving that, in seeking the power of i raising that extra million by means of ( Treasury bills, to which Mr Wilford . has taken exception, it was and is its 1 intention to raise that amount in Lon- 0 don for the purposes of the Meat Pool. 2
