NO EVIDENCE OF BETTING. QUESTION OF TIME FOR TESTS. LONDON. Jan. 31. At the annual meeting of the Hampshire Cricket Committee Dr. Bencralt, a member of the Marylebone Committee, said the committee at Maryiebonc bad made every possible inquiry at the headquarters of bookmakers at the Victoria Club, and were uiuibie lo trace any betting transactions whatever having relation to cricket. He believed the whole thing was a myth. \rmstrong objected lo the selection ot umpires in advance on the ground that u ;i (forded a chance for umpires liemg squared. As one who had followed county cricket for 45 years, he had absolute confidence in the umpires’ integrity. If test matches were played lo a finish and a trial match in addition to Gentlemen v. Players’ contests, also lest players rested throe days before a ma'ch, it meant two months out of the cricket season. It was impossible to ask counties to surrender players so long- .. Major Teimvson, speaking, said lie thou "lit three, not live, test matches ought „ he played to a finish. He suggested more trial matches before the selection ot an English team—A. and N.Z. cable. armstrongWtrovers.es. “XOT GOOD FOR THE GAME.” LONDON. Jan. 31. The Daily News, in an editorial, says: «[ s it, not," time the futile controversies relating to Armstrong ceased. The English criticisms are cabled to Australia Armstroim's retorts are cabled back, followed by inevit°uble replies. This is not seemly, good for the name, or likely to improve Hie relations ‘between the Australian and English public during the next struggle for i tie ashes. After all, Armstrong has retired from the game. The sooner we decently bury last season’s unpleasant happenings the better for our amour propre.”—A. and I N.Z. cable.
