MURDER IN A CHURCH. SOLDIER’S CRIME AT MIDNIGHT. Received December 28, 9,40 a.in. ROME, Dec. 27. The congregation at Bari, after a sermon at midnight Mass, preached according to tradition by a local layman, became panic-stricken on hearing shots, and stampeded. A soldier named Lornso, maddened by jealousy, shot his sweetheart with a revolver at point blank range, mortally wounding her, and then committed suicide on the altar steps. —A. and N.Z. cable. FATAL FIRE AT SHEFFIELD. DEATH OF FOUR PERSONS. LONDON. Dec. 26. A shocking (Ire occurred at; Sheflield. L is attributed to the burning of gramophone discs, which gave off suffocating fumes. LABOURER’S THROAT CUT. DUNEDIN, Deo. 28. The police have been advised that Reuben Smith, labourer, aged 20, was found dead at Becks with his throat cut and a bloodstained razor at bis side. KILLED BY A LORRY. HAMILTON, Dec. 28. Herbert Edward Motershaw, aged eight, vears, while attempting to mount a. lorry fell and a wheel passed over his head and killed him instantly. A Maori boy named Hi Kamil was drowned while bathing at. Ngaruawahia. OLD AGE PENSIONER’S DEATH. Information was received by the police to-day from Pahiatua that Samuel Scott ■in old age pensioner, had been found dead outside his whare at Mangamutu yesterday afternoon. He is believed to have died from heart failure. Deceased was 78 vears of ago ami had no relatives in the Dominion. Ho had been over 3U years in the district, Mr William Nicholson, of Vvaitotara, was killed on Saturday last through a motorlorry overturning. f Mr James Thompson, an old resident ol Taranaki, aged 75 years, collapsed while playing bowls on the Now Plymouth green yesterday and died immediate y. . The Wanganui police have boon advised that a married man, Mr J. H. Reardon, '■tired 30, was burned to death at Wavcrloy. It appears that Mr Reardon was at home by himself, his wife and family being away. Tho house was discovered m flames and later the shocking discovery was made that Mr Reardon had not effected an escape. At Wanganui on Saturday evening Mr George Rabono fell from a tramcar and died from injuries sustained. Mr R a bone was a well-known and respected resident of Wanganui for several years and was also well known in Napier and W oodvillc m the ''whilst' cycyling in Kilbirnio, Wellington, on Christmas Eve, a telegraph messenger mimed E. H. Foster collided with a tolonniph polo, and received injuries from which he died while being convoyed to the hospital.
