Constable Mauley, of Mai lon, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant and is to be transferred to another station. Police Superintendent Cvuickshank, _late of Greymouih, and formerly of Dannevirke, will lake up the position of Commissioner it Samoa shortly. Mr Finlay I'.etliune. headmaster of Newtown School, Wellington, died suddenly at his residence, l.yali Hay, at 11 o'clock nil Christmas Day. Mr 11. M. Peacock and Mr S. A. NobleCampbell have been appointed school dental oflicers, Hie former foi the Wellington district and the lailer for Timaru. Mr K. 11. i lili y (lately General Manager .if the New Zealand Railways) has been appointed a member of the Royal Commission, on the Local Government of Greater London. A cablegram from Washington stales that Sir John Salmond will lecture at the Harvard Law School on January 7. The invitation to do so is considered a high honour, lie will also lecture before the Siate Par Association in New York. The death occurred on Friday of Mr William 11. Tiirton, of Moiia Villa, Mount Somers. The late Mr Turlon was a member and chairman of the Mount Somers Mead Hoard and a member of the Ash burl on I 'otintv Council.
According to a Philadelphia message, the local eisteddfod, which invited Mr Lloyd George to attend a celebration on January 2. has received a cablegram from his secretary, regretting his inability in attend inasmuch a.- the Premier was not visiting the I'nited States this winter. A I'less Association telegram from Duneditt reports the death on Christinas Day of Mr Dugaicl McPherson, aged 75 years. He was three times president of ihe Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association of New Zealand and once president of the United Association of Australasia, lie was also chief of the Gaelic Society for 20 years and a member of many other'local bodies and was a prominent; freemason. The Karl of ('avail, who is to succeed Field-Marshal Sir Henry Wilson as (.'hid ;) f ihe Itnpei ial General Stall' in February, is 56 ;.eav> of age, and is an Irish representative pee:, ihe tenth of his line, lie did admirable work throughout the war. He commanded the Guards Division when ii was lir.-i formed, having previously commanded the brigade of Guards.
