POULTRY NOTES.

(By " Brooder.") The editor of the New Zealand Poultry Journal evidently realises thai; the most important question with regard, to the development of the poultry industry is the export of a probable surplus in the near future. Writing in the current issue regarding unity of purpose amongst poultrybreeders and those engaged in the industry, he says:—"Another instance in which union is essential for tiie development of the industry is in the export trade, [experimental work is being done this season by the Canterbury Egg Circle in certain shipments abroad. i hey received enquiries from Ran Francisco, New York, Glasgow, London and Vancouver, and by the Corinthic and Taiuui two sample shipments are being sent to the London market. The effort, of course, is small, but it will obtain valuable information as to what is requited, The great fault about the export trade is that insnllicienl supplies can be obtained to make suitable shipments. An older was lost to .New York for 30,000 dozen simply because the order was 100 big for one centre to fill. Less: than this amount would have meant that the whole chamber on the ship would have to be paid for, and the shippers would not accept a lesser quantity than 30.000 dozen. (.'ash could have been obtained f.o.b. as soon as the eggs passed satisfactory inspection. To develop tile export trade would mean thai Auckland, Wellington, ( t'lristchurch and Dtiuedin will have to unite. The order v,ill be under the supervision of one person, and instructions its to packing, tester.:, grading, etc., will have to be guided by him. The eggs will (lien be shipped at the various ports until the full order is complete. Mr Smdholme's great speech tit the British Knipirc Producers' Conference should be an incentive to every producer—to have confidence in his industry. We are now ablo to produce all the eggs New Zealand requires, and there should be a surplus available. Most of the bakers' order? have already been tilled, and the low price is evidence that we should be taking oil' our Leal markets a considerable number ci eggs being produced. 'I he amalgamated egg circles have a valuable work to do in this respect. IVssibh it could be belter done under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Poultry Association, as it appears to us that the work of two parent bodies is a lot of duplication and leads to unnecessary e.rpwisc. We suggesl that the next conlercia.e ~|ecl an export committee to go thoroughly into the matter and to have the power to call for supplies to (ill their order \" The Poultry Journal stales th.it "the New Zealand Poultry Association has received an assurance from the Board of Trade thai imported eggs will cease alter March, 1922. if it is assured that New Zealand has a sufficient supply of eggs for her own requirements. I' is up to everv producer to increase his flocks. Cheaper foods will strengthen the industry next year, and better egg prices may be looked for. We urge till poultrymcn to have confidence in the industry now the imported egg menace has gone." The same journal slates:—The conference committee at Palmerston North has set to work in real earnest, 'I hey are leaving no stone unturned to make the conference an educative treat. While there i.- no stint of social entertainment educative work is going to be done. Chief among the papers to lie discussed will he 'Timed effort in marketing eggs for local consumption'and expo; i." A demonstration will also be given on "How to prepare poultry for the table." A ptaetieal lesson will also be given in dissecting poultr and demonstrating how i . delect disease.. A banquet is to be given to the delegates by the citizens, and a motor exclusion around the beautiful district of Palmerston North is to be included in the programme. Another novel feature will be a cinema picture of tin poultry industry iti Pehluma, supported by a film denion'ifraling what is being d< in New Zealand. By the way the conference committee at Palmerston North is getting to work they are going to sol us an example of vital a successful event the New Zealand Poultry Conference can be made,
