FIFTEEN THOUSAND IDLE. WORKSHOPS AND FACTORIES CLOSING. By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received December 28, 8 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 22. Many more workshops and factories have given their employees notice that they are closing, with the proviso that they can again apply for employment after the holidays. From to-morrow it is estimated that there will be over 1 0,000 unemployed in the metropolitan area. • The Amalgamated Society of Engineers has suggested to Mr Estcli that the Government take over the Clyde workshops in order to carry out the existing contracts.—Press Association.
COMPETITION FROM EUROPE, Received December 28. 9.2 d u.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 28. In connection with the closing down of u number of large, engineering works there is a feeling among the unionists that the employers arc taking concerted action to evade the Arbitral ion Court awards and cut down wages. The employers deny that they are taking concerted action in closing down, hut claim that the high wages and short hours and the low prices at which iron may he imported from Europe undo* it imperative that there should law some readjustment in working conditions in Australia to gd tin* industry hack to a more favourable looting.—Press Association.
