UTILITY POULTRY SOCIETY.

MARKETING OF EGGS DISCUSSED. ,_A meeting of the Mauawatu Utility Poultry Society was held last night, Mr W. S. AVoodroofe presiding. Nine new members were elected by ballot. A letter was received • from Mr J, C. Brown, •of the Agricultural Dtpartmont, Stating that either Mr Cocker or the writer would be available to deliver a lecture to the society should the members choose to have one.—lt was decided to ask for a lecture on the “Feeding of Poultry,” to take place on August 25th. It was further decided to ask members who desired a visit from the Government specialist to hand in their names' to the secretary. The directors reporter! on their recent visit to ■ Devin and stated that, as n result of their efforts, a branch of the society had been formed in that town and would bo registered at u future date. Marketing of eggs. In referring to (he matter of prompt payment for eggs, Mr King stated that of laic long, periods had elapsed from the time ol marketing members' eggs until they received payment, for them. In bis own case, lie said, be had sent a number of eggs to the society on July 9'and had not received payment;, for them until August 5, He suggested that, it would be much more .satisfactory to all concerned if they set the mat lee on a definite basis and fixed a cer lain date, say the twentieth 'of each month, for paytlicnts to be inaiie, Under the present system, people'' who were in need of (he money were sending their eggs to the local grocers and were receiving “spot cash foil them. Smith stated that at. present tins society was accepting eggs for sale and had no reserve fund to nay for iliefn. \umcrohs sales were made locally, but pivmenr for these was not generally m.vle until the twentieth of the month, and besides there was a certain amount, of.delay in the receipt of chorines from Wellington, where iheir agents wailed until the markets were favourable before they transacted their salt's. Should local poultyyinen wish their eggs to be sold immediately (boy arrived in Wellington, they could have this done, but would run the risk of losing perhaps a shilling per dozen by selling on a glutted market, Mr T. Bruce said (hat at present the market was a bad one and sometimes their agents were forced In wait for some lime before they wore able to dispose of the Mr W, Ritchie moved that the directors lake the matter into serious consideration mid bring down a report thereon. The society, he said, was out to cater for iho small .suppliers*who, as a, rule, wanted cash for their product, lie thought- the society -hould pay cash to those who requited it. Mr Smith stated that if every member of the society guaranteed the sum of £lO to the bank they would have a sufficient surplus io arrange for an overdraft which would allow of members being paid cash Mr King seconded the motion pro forma. Mr Ritchie remarked (hat when the society had first been formed it paid for eggs every fortnight. Mr Bruce stated that in those days they were marketing only twenty or thirty dozen eggs; per month, but now they were handling several thousand dozen every week. The motion was carried. ‘
