:' ', (Per Press Association.)". ' :?■ : ' DUNEDIN, Dec.%2B. -?■ The thirtieth annual chess tournament for the Ichampionshipoosf s Now Zealand ■commenced at..two o'clock this afternoon. The following games have been ' .completed':— • ■ - Mason "v. Fouhy, centre counter gambit. On the 10th move Mason announced mate 'in two. .. - Gyies v Kelling, centre counter gambit. At move 23 Kelling gave up a rook for a bishop ■ and pawn; Gyles retaliated by giving lip a :bishop and so won Kelling s queen for a rook. After this it was easy going for Gyles, and Kelling resigned at the 33rd move; > , Dunlop v. Severno, queens gambit declined. At the 19th move Dunlop lost a piece by an error, but by a brilliant piece ■ol play he'later succeeded in mating Soverno on the 34th move. This game may take the prize for the best save. ■ Davies v. Coombs, Philidor defence. A vory even game until about tho 28th movo. Then Daviesi played well and Coombs resigned on the 34th move-
