At the Technical Education board's Co»fereiicc today exception was taken (o the class of domestic science teacher being turned out by the Otago domestic science schools, and the .following remit was carried: “That it i.| essential to the development of our system of technical education that the Ediuit ion Department issue teachers’ certificate's to men and womeli from comn.erce gind industry who have taken up or fnlcfid lc; take up technical school leaching; L -that• such examinations should include w - knowledge of English, mathematics, and,science to a definite standard. with some knowledge of psychology and methods of teaching; and that in view of the probable, extension of vocational education the time for encouraging men and women is now aE .hand.
Miss Juniper (Auckland) complained that holders of diplomas from the Olago school wore not by at/y means us valuable as they ought to be as instructresses because they were not taught to teach. Various nthey, delegates endorsed Miss* Juniper’s remarks and urged that ability to teach should be 1 specially included in the course.
Air T. 11. Cress well, chief inspector of secondary school.?, stated that regulations that were under consideration provided for the training of secondary school teachers, and, also for instituting heads of departments in largo schools who would have special knowledge in one subject or group
of subjects and would plan out the wlioh course of work on such subject or subject in the schools as well as supervise tin instruction given by the junior teachers.
