The handicap tourney of the Chess and Draughts Club was advanced a further stage" on Tuesday, some interesting games being- witnessed. K. Thorburn v. A. Whitaker: A short, sharp contest, Tharburn got up a powerful attack, and bad a good position in the opening, but lost bis way in an intricate miclgame, and succumbed to mate at move 30. A. Stewart v. T. Bruce: An adjourned game. At the commencement of play Stewart had an advantage in force, having won queen for 2 minor pieces, and although Bruco made a gallant struggle ho was eventually mated after one of the longest games of the tourney. A. Stewart v. L. Thorbnrn: A Ruy Lopez. While sacrificed a bishop for .\n attack which ho was unable (o maintain, and Thorburn had an easy win in 27 moves. 11. R. Thorburn v. W. H. Messenger: In declining the queen’s gambit Messenger lost much time with his knights, and as a result got a cramped game, and failing to find the right defence to a queen, knight and rook attack, was mated at the 24th move. 'Hie full results are: L. Thoibiun (class 2) and L. Giorgi (3) lost to A. 11. U. Wright (1): K. Thorburn (2) lost to A. Whitaker (1): A Stewart (2) boat T. Bruco (1) and lost to L. Thorburn (2); 11. R. Thorburn (1) boat W. li. Messenger (1). A hearty welcome was accorded to Mr I). S. Columb,, some time secretary to the Otago Chess Club, who has taken up his residence in Palmerston North and whose experience will he of great assistance to the Club.
