ENGINEER’S REPORT. Water tables have been cleaned in a, number of streets. The ordinary macadam streets have required a good deal of attention since the recent heavy rains and patching with metal has been carried out where necessary. The new kerb and chan-

nel in North street have been completed. A short length of kerb in Carroll street has been lowered to suit the level of the new Fcatherston street kerbing. The work under this heading has been held up for die past, fortnight owing to shortage of content. The footpaths in Stanley avenue are now being tarred and sanded, and when they are completed the footpaths' in Moornngi street will be undertaken. Good progress was being made in the Kuwait bridge tip to the ''(lit hist, when the water levels rose after the recent rains, preventing any further work being done. Up to the present the state of the work is that mo half of the southern side wall has boon put in to a height of 3 feet above foundations. Under the heading of concrete work the engineer reported that during the past throe weeks thirteen private culverts had been put in and that 52 kerb blocks, 84 channel blocks, and 41 culvert crossing- slabs had. boon made, GENERAL BUSINESS. The following recommendations by the Public Works Committee were considered ;

That Mr Rohertshaw’s application for a footway in College street for a distance of two chains from the corner of Marne greet lie granted, the cost of such work to de met out of loan moneys, and half the imonnt to he charged to the property iwners. —Approved. That the Council he ■ecommended to take over Mrs South's icw street through part sec. 975, and as '■. here has been a misapprehension in retard to the laying of the sewer, the said work to he carried out at a later date, the mm required having already been deposit’ll with the Council.—Approved. On the recommendation of the Reserves Committee it was decided that as the proKisod pavilion at the North street I’ark is ion-essential at the present time, its eivcion he deferred. (V. Crahh, chairman of he committee, also moved that the e\l'nuon of the pavilion in the park in Kit/•lerhert street should he postponed. ■‘Houses are the nresent pressing need,” said Cr. Crahh. This was agreed to. CIIAXXm.IXG OF STREETS. Pursuant to his notice of motion Cr. .lodgens moved: ‘‘That the resolution passed at a previous meeting of the Council, whereby it was decided to charge .he whole’or a part of the cost of ehunlelling to the adjoining property owners, shall not apply to streets already vested in die Council.” The mover urged that the “ost of channelling came under the heading of reading. It was quite independent if the footuaths, the construction of which he property owners contributed, to, and as mch it was manifestly milair that the property owners adjoining should he asked to hear a share of the expense. Cr. Crab’i seconded the motion pro ■(irma, and stated that he wished to make he position a little clearer. If the CounA 1 had to hear the whole expense of chanlolling it would have to reduce its share (if he cost, of constructing footpaths accordingly. , . . , The motion was put to the meeting and lost.
