Abnormal monsooiial rains have caused floods throughout, the country. being parti* cularly severe in Bengal, where a number of villages were swept a.way. At Jamsliedpu,- a' thousand lints in the native quarter were destroyed, and many people are homeless. Large areas of crops in various districts have been destroyed. '1 he main streets ol Calcutta are deeply Hooded, and traffic lias been suspended. Heavy damage was done to property. Advices from Kabul state that the Government is discussing the proposed treaty with Britain. In view of the coiicesHons Offered by Britain the Bolshevik influence is waning, it is understood that delegates will shortly leave again for India, to conclude a treaty. It is reported that a strong party is trying to oust the Amir from the throne, but so far their efforts have been futile.
Reports from Tnrkistun state that the Bolsheviks have dismissed al! .Moslem teachers from the schools and introduced Bolshevik propaganda, confiscated the valuables of rich merchants and placed them under surveillance to prevent them escaping' from the country.. in order, .to. escape from Bolshevik rule. Birtanis of emigrants are pouring oyer the frontier into India, where the Foreign Political nepartnient has created a special section with the view to combating the Bolshevik propaganda there and in .Middle Asia.
Advices from Bagdad state that the column, under Brigadier-General Coningbarn, returning from Dowaniyali reached Jlilla after dealing with ihe rebel villages on route. All the rolling stock of the railvats in the disturbed area has been secured. An ineft’pcli.ve attack was made by the rebels on Mohmidiya, on Saturday night. 1 here arc indications that tin- rebels are demoralised and that the spread_of the disUirbanees is checked.
