TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
QUESTION of financial support
“That the Minister of Education be written to and informed that the Council does not consider it is in the province o local bodies to provide funds for trohmcal education, and that ou ’ in £ to ,llls “ a matter of national importance, the Government should undertake tho whole of Mio expense of education, on a liberal scale. the above is the context of a. resolution passed bv the Nelson City Council and iorwiirdcd to the Palmerston North Borough Council for consideration and support. When the resolution was read at cist night’s meeting of tho Council, Cr Hudgens affirmed that It was advisable for oc.il bodies to bo in close touch with educational .matters m their «cver.l d|s nc ..
To endorse the resolution would be a yct.rourado stop, ho said, and moved that tne jotter should bo merely received. (V Oram seconded tho motion. UV Spooner said tliat he entirely agreed with Cr Hudgens’ motion I lie Council was in close sympathy with the aims of technical education, but at present tho Council’s financial abilities wore tax .1 to the utmost in the maintenance of roads ami other municipal undertakings. The Mavor: We. are—right to the limit.
Continuing, Cr Spooner said that, v.ith all due respect to the engineer and eis staff, tin roads were in a shocking condition. The £75 a year paid by the ( oiiik-i to the Technical School could be very well utilised in other directions. Education should bo. a. national burden and tho C*oveminent should hear tho entire expense of tho technical schools. , Cr Crabb agreed with the motion. Me considered that local bodies should be Concerned with the technical education in their districts :ind it was desirable that a stronger feeling in support of it should be engen-
der'd. The Government was labouring under a iuige financial burden as it is and, in any ease, the expenditure on education in Now Zealand was as great. if not rfreater, than in any other country in ‘he world. “I heartily support, the motion,” Cr Crabb concluded. 'Hio Mayor observed that the educational vole this year had been increased from j wo to two and a half millions. The motion that the letter be received was then carried.
