COUNCIL TO MAKE ENQUIRIES,
Tile fact that nearly the whole of the seating ;ieeoiiimodatioii at the Opera House in’s beep hooked in advance at recent heat ideal performances was mentioned by lie Mayor at last night’s meeting of the lorotigh ( omii-il. “There has been a limner ol complaints about the booking,” sa.iu Mr Nash. “We are in,the hands of the .. C. Williamson company, hut ednsideraion should be given to people who cannot (ford to book seats in. advance at the iresent heavy prices.’’ lie considered Unit souuf rci'li’ictioiis should be imposed op the iinount of booking perniitfed, and movi d hat the chairman of the Opera House (Tnnmittec and the I own Clerk should communicate with other councils- where there are municipal theatres, and ascertain what restrictions, it any, are imposed. Councillor Graham mentioned that, the company referred to had cut Hastings out of their North Maud itinerary on account of the restrictions on hooking in the municipal theatre in that town. ( ouneillor Crabb seconded the motion and added that he considered the municipalities should make a stand and support (he action taken at Hastings. If such towns as Wanganui and Palmerston North adopted a similar attitude the company would have to full in with the arrangements.
When the motion i\as carried the "Mayor intimated that he had a suggestion in mind that ho would make to the Council later, it would in all probability have the result that theatrical companies would not have opposition of an individual municipality, but of the whole lot.
