DEATH OF LORD FISHER.

FAMOUS ADMIRAL PAS&ES AWAY LONDON. July 10. The death is announced of Admiral Lord Fisher, after an internal operation, aged 79. Admiral Fisher suffered a long illness during the winter, and went to the Riviera, lie returned to London apparency improved, and resumed correspondence in the press with great vigour. His fatal illness was brief, but its seriousness was eviI dent front the outset, and an operation was performed last night. Lord Fisher was conscious to the end. A memorial service will be held in Westminster Abbey on Tuesdiy, The newspapers unanimously acclaim Lord Fisher as a great national hero. His relatives are receiving an enormous number of messages of sympathy, including telegrams from the Kimr and Queen, and Mr Llovd George.--(A. and N.Z. Cable.)

| Admiral Sir John Arbutlinot Fisher was born in 1841, and was a son of L'apt. Win. Fisher, of the 73th Highlanders. He entered the Navy in 1354, and was promoted to lieutenant in 1860. He took part in the capture of Canton and I'eilm forts; obtained the Beaufort Testimonial ; rose to be rear-admira! in 1890; served in the Crimean War 1855; China War 1859-60; Egyptian War 1882 (in which he commanded the Inflexible at the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882). He was Director of Naval Ordnance from 1886-91; Admiral Superintendent at Portsmouth Dockyard in [ 1891; and was Controller of the Navy and Lord of the Admiralty from 1892 to 1897. Ho was Commander-in-Chief on the North American and West Indies Station between 1897-99; Delegate to the Peace Conference at The Hague, 1899; Commander-in-Chief at the Mediterranean Station, 1899-1902; Second Sea Lord of the Admiraltv. 1902-3; Commander-in-Chief at, Portsmouth. 1903-4; First Sea Lord of the Admiralty, 1904-10 and 1914-15; Chairman Roval Commission on Oil Fuel. 1912.J
