ALLEGED BURGLARY.
MIDDLE-AGED MAN CHARGED. \ middle-aged man, John William Mo».uro appeared nt the Magistrate's Court this morning charged with, on or about April 1, 1920, breaking' and entering the premises of Lauchlan and Co., jewellers, Palrnerston North. Accused was not represented by counsel. Detective-Sergeant Quirko who conduced the prosecution, Bin tod 'that accused was arrested at Auckland some weeks ago on other charges, and silverware and fancy goods (produced), wcro
found in his possession. Horace Ireland, manager for Lauchlan and Co., gave evidence to the effect that ho locked both Ihe upstairs and downstairs doors on April Ist, and on returning next morning found both doors forced and goods to the value of £lßl missing. A. E. A. Fredrick, clerk at the Palmornton North Post Office, produced two parcels, one addressed to "J. Martin McLean, carpenter, Post Office, Petone," and the other to ".J, W. M. Philips, carpenter, Johnsonville," and gave evidence that tho parcels had been received by their office fiom tho G.P.0., Auckland. On being opened iho parcel addressed to McLean was found to contain one dozen e.p. forks. Tho second parcel contained a large assortment of silverware; wristlet watches, etc., all of which was identified as the goods iii,leu from Lauchlan's by means of the tickets, which were .still attached, by Mr Ireland (manager), Miss Ivy Hose Martin, rhop assistant, and Mr M. Zeincit, recently employed by the firm. Plain-clothes Constable Knight, stationed at Auckland, gave evidence that, when accused was arrested at Auckland on April 23 there were found in his possession a, silver cigarette case, one purse, and two left luggage tickets. On April 26 ho secured from the Auckland luggage office two parcels, oi,i> of v.l.ich contained jewellery. On .May 11 he found in n room a suit case containing clothing, which accused pleaded Rtiilty to stealing from the Crown Clothing Company, Auckland. Among this clothing was a quantity of tho silverware produced. Alter reviewing the property he approached the accused to obtain a signed order ,o have the goods delivered, to which accused refused, and asked to bo shown a list of articles contained in the two parcels produced in Court. Ho showed accused tho list, and accused said: "I did not think I had as much of the Palrnerston North stuff left as that, as [ did not take a list when I posled the goods. 1 am glad you ; recovered the Stuff, as it would only have [ wastrel while 1 was in gaol. I have sold ' piite a quantity of this pear, and did not , hink 1 had more than five watches left. ' Accused, who reserved his defence and ' ilended not guilty, was committed to the ' Supreme Court for trial. Bail was not ! ■ought. !
